Never Let Me Go

Congratulations to "Lynn R.", the winner in Maggie's giveaway. Thank you to all who participated!

Last year I hit a milestone birthday. It’s one of those events which causes you to pause and reflect.

I’m truly blessed in my life– I have a great family, a day job I love and a flourishing writing career, yet sometimes I wish I had started writing years earlier. I wonder how many books I would have published by now if I made the decision to become an author when I was younger.

But then a few months back, an article I read about a woman named Carmen Herrera, a famous Cuban-American abstract painter, really put things in perspective. What’s noteworthy about Carmen are not just her bold and bright paintings, but about how her career unfolded. You see Herrera sold her first piece of art in 2004 when she was 89 years old.

89.

Since then, she’s had exhibits from London to New York and her life story was made into a well-received documentary. Now she’s 101 and still painting.

Carmen’s story is a good reminder that no matter where you are in life, start today doing what you love and keep moving forward.

I may not have started writing twenty years ago, but five years ago I did start and since then I haven’t stopped. And that includes my fifth and newest romantic suspense release, Never Let Me Go.

NEVER LET ME GO

“We’re looking for Donald Osco. Do you know where he is?”

Questions from a team of federal agents is the last thing Assistant DA Elise Grady expected on a trip out to Las Vegas to visit her friend Donnie.
Truth is, after seeing his new million dollar townhouse, and the tens of thousands of dollars hidden away in his dresser drawer, Elise has some questions of her own - along with an uneasy feeling that Donnie is involved in something way over his head.

But those answers will have to wait because now Donnie and his new fiancĂ©, Angie have gone missing. And with the authorities in on the search, the lines between right and wrong begin to blur as Elise becomes determined to do whatever it takes to find the young couple. Which includes teaming up with Angie’s handsome brother, whose own secrets and unexpected kisses are turning Elise’s carefully aligned world upside down.

Focused, professional, disciplined, there’s good reason Marc Ruiz is considered one of the top Secret Service agents around. And while he has spent his career dedicated to the protection of world and national leaders, his latest operation is hitting a little too close to home - tracking down his sister and her new fiancĂ© who have are not only being chased down by federal agents, but a team of criminals hell bent on revenge.

Add a sizzling attraction to a brainy and beautiful attorney into the mix and Marc soon realizes that playing outside the rules may be the only way to keep them all safe.

Elise looked around at all the noise and the people. She had to give it to him. It was definitely a smart idea to be here. Surrounded by hundreds of people, they could talk freely and there was little or no chance that anyone could be listening in. Okay, so he was protecting her and he did tell her about the bug in her hotel room. Maybe they could work together to track down Angie and Donnie before anyone else did.

“I have to admit this was smart,” she conceded.

“I’m sorry, would you mind repeating that?” He asked with a coy smile on his face. His eyes softened and that dimple on his left cheek emerged. He had a great smile. A distractingly great smile. Elise looked away and behind her sunglasses, blinked her eyes to clear the image from her mind.

“The feds are probably listening in on your calls, and from this point on, will be around every corner. You and I both want to find Donnie and Angie first so we can hear from them what the hell is going on. It might be time to team up our efforts.” Marc was giving her a full court press. And all of his arguments made sense. A lot of sense.

“So what’s it going to be?” he pressed on. “Are we going to play nice and work together?”

Elise let out a deep breath and moved her glasses over her head. “Huling and Conti.”

A confused expression washed over Marc’s face. “Excuse me?”

“The agents from this morning. Their names are Huling and Conti. So aside from questioning me do you think they also bugged and searched my room? And what about the townhouse?”

“The bug, yes. Tearing the hotel room or the townhouse apart, no. Which makes this all the more complicated and …”

“And?” she prompted. He seemed distracted now, shifting slightly to glance over his shoulder.

“And, more dangerous,” he added in a low tone. And then without warning, his arm moved around her shoulder, his head dropped close and his lips moved even closer. Inches from hers. “Just go with it,” he whispered.

She was about to ask him what go with it meant. When in the next moment his mouth covered hers in a gentle kiss.

At first, his lips moved slowly over hers and then the contact became more sensuous. More passionate. Something deep within ignited and without thought or care she responded, kissing him back and then encircling her arms around his neck to deepen the connection and press herself more fully into his embrace.

She was lost in it all. His touch, his taste, the feel of him against her. And then suddenly, the spell was broken.

With the sound of someone’s throat clearing and the presence of someone standing over them, Marc lifted his head. When they separated, for a brief instant Elise felt dazed. The heat of his touch still sending electric pulses through her.

When she looked up, she saw the two agents from this morning standing by the ledge of the pool.

At the sight of Huling and Conti, Elise disentangled herself from Marc’s embrace. Marc stood, and with Elise’s head still swimming from the kiss, he reached out to take her hand, helping her as she slowly got to her feet. Shielding her eyes from the sun she regained her bearings and looked straight at the agents.

“We meet again. Can I help you two?”

“Just wondering if you had any word from Donnie since we last spoke?” It was Huling doing the honors. “Has he tried to contact you?”

“Contact me?  No. There’s been no phone call or text or e-mail.” Technically none of it was a lie. For the moment she wasn’t about to let on that some arbitrary numbers written on the side of a sunscreen bottle just might hold the clue to where he was.

“So, you seem to be getting very friendly with Ruiz here.”

Elise cast a sideways glance at Marc. His eyes were hidden once again by his glasses and he had been quiet during the exchange. Huling and Conti must have done their homework on who Marc was.

“We hooked up last night. It was after Donnie and Angie’s cancelled nuptials. But you two probably know that already.” Marc’s demeanor was cocky and assured and as he spoke he draped a casual arm around Elise. Though she could feel his fingers digging slightly into her waist. It was as though he was sending her a silent message to be quiet. It took everything she had to keep her mouth shut.

Huling gave a suspicious stare to both of them. “Well if you or Agent Ruiz hear anything, it’s important you call us. Right away,” he added with a hard look.

“Agent?” Elise repeated and looked over in Marc’s direction as his hand gripped ever so tighter around her waist.

“Your new boyfriend here is an agent with the U.S. government. I guess you didn’t know that?”

Elise was too stunned to speak as a sly smile crossed Marc’s face. “We haven’t gotten to all the interesting details of our lives yet. But there’s plenty of time for that. Isn’t there sweetheart?”

And with Huling and Conti standing there watching, Agent Marc Ruiz’s soft, sexy lips met hers again.
