Tropical Islands Are Romantic

With: Kathleen Mix

Congratulations to "Erin", the winner in Kathleen's giveaway. Thank you to all who participated!

My newest romantic suspense, Impossible Ransom, is set on a charter sailboat and an island in the Caribbean. To me, setting a romance in the Caribbean seems natural. After all, isn’t it the best place to fall in love?

Tropical islands are romantic. The silvery moonlight is infectious, and our minds are primed to think of what could be. Warm days and nights mean our heroines can forget the heavy coats. She can be sexy and wear fewer clothes. The lush, white beaches allow us to see the wonderful body of our hero, and appealing flesh is a strong aphrodisiac.

Tropical islands provide a break from the everyday routine. After a few days relaxing on a far-away island, we slow down from our frantic everyday pace and have time to think about falling in love. The warm days and nights are more conducive to umbrella-clad drinks and daydreaming. We’re more daring when we’re on vacation, and attraction and caring are more likely to occur.

Tropical islands have boats, and boats have captains. Men who live and work by the sea have always held a special attraction for readers. The excitement of the lifestyle is contagious, and our fantasies can run wild.

Tropical islands are logical. My biggest reason for setting my stories in the Caribbean is totally selfish. I love the islands and the people who live there, and I know the islands well. I’ve spent many months on my sailboat immersing myself in the culture. When I’m not there, I think of them as a second home.

An old writers’ axiom recommends authors write what they know. Research and hours on the Internet are sometimes a reasonable substitute. But in my case, research is unnecessary. I know the magic of the islands to our south and always find them the perfect place to set another romance. My next story, Willing Target, takes place in the Virgin Islands. I can hardly wait.

So, do you enjoy the islands? Share your thoughts on romance in the sun.
Kathleen will be giving away a digital copy of IMPOSSIBLE RANSOM to one person leaving a comment or email entry.

Author Bio:
Kathleen Mix is a multi-published author of romance and romantic suspense.
Years ago, she escaped the structured life of a computer nerd and database administrator and moved aboard her sailboat with her husband and a reluctant Sheltie. They headed south to the Caribbean, and she wrote non-fiction travel and sailing articles. But since she was sailing under starlit skies and walking on the world’s most beautiful white-sand beaches, her thoughts soon turned to romance. She started writing fiction while anchored in the Virgin Islands, and the rest, as they say, is now history.
Currently, Kathleen lives in Virginia. For book excerpts and pictures of her boat visit

Impossible Ransom

The one man she hates is the only one who can save her…

Working as part of a yacht crew sounded like the perfect escape for senator’s daughter Val Ferrell. Glorious Caribbean beaches, turquoise seas, and freedom from her overbearing father? Heaven. But when the ship is hijacked by violent men—who want to use Val to get to her father—Val’s fantasy turns into a nightmare. Now her only hope is the ship’s captain, who happens to be her ex-lover.

After disobeying an order, covert operative Nick O’Shea’s been assigned yacht captain duty. Working side-by-side with the tiny blonde who makes him crazy—and keeping his hands off her—was definitely punishment. But when Val’s life is endangered, Nick must choose between staying aboard and fighting to retake the boat or risking their lives by attempting an escape to an isolated Caribbean island. With the ransom deadline rapidly approaching, he’s running out of time...
