Giveaway Alert!
Where does a unique story come from? Since the seven basic
storylines
have been listed and reinvented, why do we continue to tell stories? What
within each romantic suspense makes us pick up another and like it for its own
story? Or perhaps not like it at all? What makes each story we tell unique?
I’ve written about how locations inspire my stories
and my characters’ actions, even about how the location influences the plot. Individuals
in my life and the world around me play an important part, too. Thing like the news, what I hear, a T-shirt in
an airport, observing folks out for their evening walk…and even getting my
makeup touched up for a party.
Last summer I went to a makeover party and the makeup
artist asked how I thought up different stories. I replied that everything
inspired me. She didn’t believe that having my makeup done could inspire a
romantic suspense.
CHALLENGE
ACCEPTED
It took only minutes to realize that her occupation
was exactly what I needed for my next proposal. Days later, Kenderly Tyler had
been hired by a mobster wife’s to fix her hair and makeup before an important
dinner. My heroine witnessed her client’s murder and needed to be rescued by my
hero. BULLETPROOF BADGE (I’ve been told and reminded) was one of the most
organic stories I’ve written. The occupations of the characters drove the plot.
Each scene grew from the previous. I can’t say it was the easiest I’ve written,
but it’s definitely one I had a lot of fun finishing.
on author BJ Daniels.
SHOTGUN JUSTICE, Texas Rangers: Elite Troop #2, Harlequin Intrigue March 2016
I write “on-the-run, heroine-in-jeopardy” stories set
in Texas. That’s my personal “basic” storyline. But hopefully each story is
told in a very unique way. Marshals, sheriffs, cops, federal agents and cowboys
pair up with scientists, cops, shop owners, astronomers, agents and beauticians
in major cities and small towns. I
shouldn’t run out of ways to make them different. There’s just too many cities,
things to see and people around my home state to ever have to repeat myself.
Writers continually accept the challenge to make our
stories unique with each book. Put ten authors in a room, give them the same
facts, and at least ten stories will be born. Remember those seven basic plots?
Even the story of Beauty and the Beast changes if “Beauty” is the hero.

My mom used to say "Well, don't that beat all" when she was amazed by something.
ReplyDeleteI think I've said that once or twice in my life, Joan.
DeleteVery cool.
I loved the post, thanks for sharing! It's incredible how easy a character can be inspired by someone like a makeup artist and end up in a romantic suspense book :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway! Winning a book is always a pleasure.
You're welcome, Natalija.

DeleteMy grandmother always had some odd sayings, but they always made me smile!
ReplyDeleteMy father-in-law says: My stars and garters.
DeleteI thought he'd made it up, but then heard it in several movies from the 40's.

ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Lorie !!
DeleteI love writing & reading romantic suspense.
Wonderful post, Angi. I love hearing where other authors get their inspiration from.
ReplyDeleteAs a reference librarian, I spent years answering all sorts of crazy questions. But every once in a while, the interesting answers I found ended up as ideas for full-length novels or inspirations for interesting characters. :)
That's so very cool Sharon !
DeleteI sure appreciate that IDEA !!
Hi Angi- My favorite saying these days is What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. And I do love your books.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tammy! It's always good to hear that people like my stories.
DeleteI listen to Kelly Clarkson's song all the time !
Two of my favorites are suspense and westerns. I have read the Harlequin Intrigues since first discovering romances. There are some good authors, you among them, writing in this line. I know I can always get a taste of the West and a suspenseful story with a hero to save the day and a heroine who is fighting for herself, but needs help. I like the sound of your new series. Will be looking for more of your books.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU, LibraryPat !!
DeleteI fell in love with Intrigues ! It's a dream come true writing for them !
You have joined a good group. I have enjoyed BJ Daniels' books for years. It was very nice to be able to meet her and her husband at RT this year.
DeleteThat's so cool Pat. Are you in the DFW area?
DeleteI was at RT in Dallas, too.
No. We live in NE TN. There are so many good writer-reader events going on in Texas, I wish we lived closer. RT was a bit overwhelming. I did attend Kickass Cops, Cowboys and Kisses so I guess we "met." It would be nice to attend again, but I don't know if our budget could handle it. For all you authors do, it costs you much more.
DeleteIt sounds like you are an expert in setting, Angi. Your books would be interesting to read in this regard.
