OAKANDSMEDES, FADED PINK BOOT & HASHTAG THAT

Congratulations to "Julie O", the winner in Angi's giveaway. Thank you to all who participated!

OAKANDSMEDES, FADED PINK BOOT and HASHTAG THAT
or Inside the Minds of Four Traveling Authors

For something a little different I thought I’d share a little from my weekend. I’m driving back from a writing retreat in Georgia today. I’ve had the best time during hanging out with three special women and authors: Lizbeth Selvig, Nicki Salcedo and JoAnna Grace.  I thought I’d share some pieces of conversations that led to much laughter and a lot of creativity. Each of us got out of the truck at a remote cabin…in the dark…and said…

“Isn’t this how horror movies begin?”

If you’re an inquiring reader and want to know how the mind of a writer works… Well, I’m not an expert, but here’s what happens after we spark an idea and the chain of events after. An author sees or hears something. It sparks an interest or . We store it in a little mind folder (or real one). Our subconscious percolates while we go about our business. Then it’s time for the idea to become a story. Will it stand up through the editing process? We always hope so, but doubt ourselves about three quarters of the way through the book. ( lol )

DRIVING THROUGH VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI
Liz and JoAnna had never visited so we made a quick dash along the historic downtown drive. We see a street sign: DABNEY. “That’s a funny name.” “Oh, I should write a character with that name.” “And her last name can be the next street sign.” “Dabney Beresford.” “That’s hilarious. What would the next one be?”

HASHTAG THAT
Some of our hashtags (you can check us out on Twitter) throughout the trip were:
#CrazyRoadChicks                                    #StreetNamedCharacters
#HowDoTheyRememberThisStuff             #GoingThroughBirmingham
#DontPassOnTheRight

Did anything we’ve seen so far influence our writing? Everybody was gracious and shared with me a line or two from the first full day of writing:

JOANNA’S QUOTE:
He wanted the fairytale. Crazy as it was, he wanted to be more than a bloodline, more than a soldier, more than a fighter, and a beast. There was something sacred about being someone’s mate, someone’s husband and best friend, someone’s protector.  … he wanted to be the knight in shining armor.

NICKI’s QUOTE:
The air was filled with the last gray fog of winter. Trees branches held both dead leaves and the first buds of spring. Lia could see past the barren vegetation and imagine the colors that would bloom. This one white. That one purple. Some would shed their petals into the wind and other would shed their petals in a suicidal fall, straight to the ground. She knew which trees at would blossom for weeks. She knew the trees that would flower only for a day, and then die.

LIZBETH’S QUOTE:
“And so the therapist comes out.” She folded her arms and fixed him with her best theatrical scowl.
“Nah. Just trying to say thanks in a very awkward way. I appreciate you bothering to come. I never think out loud—I’m not one for hashing things out over coffee. Make a decision and see it through, that’s my motto. So, it’s hard to admit I’m lost, but I am.”
“Then you’re a very evolved male.”
     “Nope. Neanderthal. Just desperate.”

ANGI’S QUOTE:
Major Parker wasn’t pondering any longer. He had both feet on the floor and leaned forward on his desk. “It’s already been decided, Jesse. This isn’t a debate.”
“I had her thrown in jail, sir. She’s not going to listen to me.”
“Make her listen.”
“Who else is on the detail?”
“Did I mention a detail? One riot, one Ranger.” Parker stood, ready to dismiss Jesse. “You’ll be coordinating with the county sheriff. You’ve got the upper hand. You know he’s coming. Think you can handle it?”

I love being inspired to write about my location,
but I also love writing at an inspiring location.

  3. If you haven't, you need to check these ladies' posts and tweets! And, you can't help but laugh at Angi's Bumble Bounce YouTube video. I'm so happy I was able to be a long distance #crazyroadchick for a short while last night. I still like the #funkysockgang best though. :) I'm really looking forward to reading all the books your cabin trip inspired.

    2. In downtown Vicksburg they have trees and shrubs planted in front of buildings on the street. There is parking between some of them, but street sign warnings that state "No Passing On Right." We thought that was sort of a "duh" thing. I mean...you can't pass, there's a tree there.

    1. I have to admit that we continued to notice the names throughout the trip. On the way home, the game moved to billboards: Love Arbys was a favorite.
