Facing the Past

Congratulations to Janice H., the winner in Elizabeth's giveaway. Thank you to all who participated!

Facing the Past: an FBI Profiler Returns Home to Solve the Case of Her Career

The heroine of VANISHED, the second novel in my Profiler series, became a profiler with the FBI because her best friend disappeared when she was twelve years old and was never found.  Now, eighteen years later, the Nursery Rhyme Killer is back, and Evelyn finally gets the chance to close the case that has defined her whole life.

Sending her back to her hometown is filled with memories, both good and bad.  It’s where she found her first real home, with the grandparents who took her away from her alcoholic mother when Evelyn was ten.  It’s where she met her first real friend, in next-door neighbor Cassie Byers.  And it’s where the Nursery Rhyme Killer struck for the third time before disappearing, and taking Cassie away.  In HUNTED, the first book in the series, Evelyn learns she was supposed to be a victim, too.  She’s never uncovered why she survived and Cassie disappeared.

Now that she’s back in South Carolina, she has to deal with a police force who remembers her as the best friend of a victim, and with her memories of being ostracized as the only biracial girl in her school.  She also has to navigate an ever-growing pool of victims, some closer than she’d like.  Through it all, she’s battling the fear that Cassie is gone for good – and the hope that maybe she’s still out there somewhere, still alive, waiting to be found.

Her one solace is FBI Hostage Rescue Team agent Kyle “Mac” McKenzie, who’s nearby for a different case, and whom she got close to in HUNTED.  As Evelyn starts to close in on the Nursery Rhyme Killer, she’ll have to face the demons from her past if she wants any chance of a future with Mac – or a future at all, because the Nursery Rhyme Killer may be looking to remedy an eighteen-year mistake and make Evelyn vanish as well.

About VANISHED, Book 2 in the Profiler Series from MIRA Books (releasing Dec. 30):

Sometimes, the past can haunt you...

Eighteen years ago, FBI profiler Evelyn Baine's best friend, Cassie Byers, disappeared, the third in a series of unsolved abductions. Only a macabre nursery rhyme was left at the scene, a nursery rhyme that claimed Evelyn was also an intended victim. Now, after all these years of silence, another girl has gone missing in South Carolina, and the Nursery Rhyme Killer is taking credit. But is Cassie's abductor really back, or is there a copycat at work?

Sometimes, the past is best forgotten...

Evelyn has waited eighteen years for a chance to investigate, but when she returns to Rose Bay, she finds a dark side to the seemingly idyllic town. As the place erupts in violence and the kidnapper strikes again, Evelyn knows this is her last chance. If she doesn't figure out what happened to Cassie eighteen years ago, it may be Evelyn's turn to vanish without a trace.

Stine said, "Want to read a top-rate thriller? VANISHED had me turning page after page. Wow. When you talk about our most-promising new thriller writers, put Elizabeth Heiter on the list!"

  14. Wow, Elizabeth! I enjoyed the lengthy book blurb because it told me a lot about the chilling aspects of the story as well as the romantic interest. I do like a good dose of both in my fave romantic suspense genre. So I'm really glad I "met" you on the JRS blog today. Thanks for the post. jdh2690@gmail.com
