THE BROKEN

Congratulations to Cindy O., the winner of Shelley's giveaway. Thank you to all who participated.

I’m thrilled to be here celebrating my romantic suspense debut, THE BROKEN!

In THE BROKEN, broadcast journalist Kate Johnson is on the run, hiding from a serial killer who needs her dead and a past that left her scarred. Legendary FBI profiler Hayden Reed is on the hunt, desperate to track down Kate and gain her trust, for it’s her darkest secret that can stop a blood-thirsty serial killer. A dark and twisty thriller, THE BROKEN is ultimately a story of hope and healing.

It may not come as a surprise, then, that the book was born at a time when my family was in desperate need of healing.

A few years ago my father had what he thought was a mild stroke. Fiercely independent and a tad bit cantankerous, he checked himself out of the medical center in his small rural community in Northern Nevada. The next day, he hopped on his quad and drove off the side of a mountain. His chest crushed and lungs collapsed, he was life-flighted to a large urban hospital where we learned he’d had multiple strokes and would forever be dependent on others.

His body and spirit broken, my dad told us he wished he’d died on that mountain.

Um, yeah. Tough times. Which in my world meant story time, because a good story makes everything better. Right?

I dragged a heavy chair to my dad’s hospital bedside and told him I had a hazy idea for a book about a bunch of broken people who fight evil, but I needed some help brainstorming. My dad glared at me. I kept talking. I came up with Kate, a justice-seeking broadcast journalist, and Hayden, a hope-filled FBI profiler, and, after a particularly nasty glare from my dad, a cantankerous old blind man named Smokey Joe who lived on a mountain.

That old man, who despite being blind and broken, lured my father in, and for the next few hours we both found comfort in a good story. That brainstorming session became the first of many as Dad and I talked through what would become the first book in my Apostles Series, THE BROKEN.

So on behalf of Kate, Hayden, and my dad (Smokey Joe), thanks for celebrating with me!

Excerpt
Hayden knew this story hadn’t been easy, but they were chasing evil, which invariably meant a walk through hell. “Katrina, I’m sorry you—”

“You’re sorry?” She dropped Smokey’s hand and bolted upright. “For what? For the scars that disfigure my face and body? For the ineptitude of your law enforcement brothers? For believing in a system that doesn’t work?”

“It works.”

“Like hell it does! It’s a broken system, a broken world, Agent Reed, shattered and ugly and full of evil.”

The force of her words, the power of her emotion slammed him like a heat wave rolling across the desert.

Hayden worked with enough victims to know that no matter how loud he talked and how long he offered valid, substantiated arguments, Katrina wouldn’t hear him, not at that moment. She wouldn’t hear that the scars had faded, that law enforcement had not failed because he was still working the case, and that she was safe. Full of anger and fear, she was as deaf as Smokey Joe was blind.

    1. We are kindred spirits, LS. My happy places are libraries. When I was a kid, all of my friends would be playing ball and swimming during summer vacation, and I would be camped out in the library.

My fav comfort reads are ones that leave me with a smile... sometimes they have a touch of comedy to them... other times they are ones that have a character's personality shine through the pages. 1. So...my Tami Hoag story. When I was in college, my postal carrier delivered one of Tami's books to my door. I didn't order it, and it was addressed to someone else. I sent the book back marked with something like RECIPIENT NOT AT THIS ADDRESS. A week later it came back to me, and I sent it back AGAIN. It came back a third time, and I decided that the universe wanted me to keep it. I did and have been a HUGE fan ever since. Thanks for stopping by!

  8. I love reading a cozy mystery when I want something comforting. Still gives me a little mystery but doesn't leave my heart racing like thrilling suspense stories.

    1. I heard the BEST description of cozy vs suspense the other day. When you're reading a cozy and drinking your tea, someone can come up behind you and tap your shoulder. You wave them off and say, Just a minute, I must finish this page. With a suspense, she taps you on the shoulder and the #$% tea goes flying! Cozy = Comfort!
