How Does A Commando Fall In Love?

Congratulations to "Erin F.", the winner in Melissa's giveaway. Thank you to all who participated!

Melissa Cutler here and I'm so excited to be on Just Romantic Suspense today talking about my latest Action-Adventure Romance, Tempted into Danger. ICE Special Agent Diego Santero first appeared on the page in my 2012 book Seduction Under Fire. Before his first scene, I'd already set him up as one of the best black ops agent in the world, but I had no idea until he swaggered into the room that he was going to be a profanity spouting Jersey boy with a short fuse and a biting sense of humor. Color me surprised.

At that very moment, I knew Diego needed his own book with his own happily-ever-after. There was only one little problem…how do I get this alpha brute of a soldier to fall in love? What kind of woman could make a man like that open his heart and profess his eternal love? Then an old adage came to mind—the bigger they are, the harder they fall. After that, all the pieces clicked into place. Wait until you meet Vanessa Crosby, a math geek extraordinaire, and a most unlikely force-of-nature to bring one of the toughest men in the world to heel.

Here's an exclusive look at Tempted into Danger to show you just how much chemistry these two are packing:

Vanessa outlined the FDNY symbol on Diego's chest with her finger. His already taut nipple beaded so tightly, the color leached from it. “I think this is all happening for a reason—finding the number patterns in the accounts, the kidnapping attempt, being here with you.” She spread her hand flat on his skin. “I’ve never done anything that mattered before. I want to do what I can to stop the submarine sale. Let me help you.”

His other hand found her forearm. His thumb stroked her. “Okay, but my offer stands. You change your mind at any time or decide that the risks are too much, say the word. I’ll get you out of Panama safely. I know how to make people disappear. That’s my promise to you, understand?”

She leaned into the hand on her leg. When he wrapped his fingers around the sensitive hollow behind her knee, a charge of reckless desire lighted through her system.

It was that recklessness that goaded her to slide the hand on his jaw toward his ear, losing her fingertips in his thick hair. He closed his eyes but didn’t stop her or tense at her touch like he had before. His hand moved higher, leaving her knee for the tender flesh of her thigh.

Just like that, she knew unequivocally that if they kissed, if their clothes came off, they’d burn the jungle down with the heat of it. With her forehead resting on Diego’s and their mouths inches way from contact, she rubbed a fingertip over his lower lip. “What are you thinking?”

After drawing a slow breath, his eyelids cracked open. The look he leveled on her was so potent with hunger and need it made her toes curl. “You don’t want to know.”

“Maybe I do.”

Tempted into Danger is available all over:

Check out TEMPTED on Goodreads, too: http://bit.ly/WaxtqC

Since I was talking about Diego in Seduction Under Fire, I'd love to give away a (print or digital) copy of this backlist title to one commenter. Good luck!

  13. I am always fascinated when an author talks about how a character just takes over and demands attention. That has to be so interesting when that happens. How does it command your writing process? Do you have to immediately stop and deal with it, internalize it for a while or something else?

Thanks for the excerpt and post!

    1. Great question! When that happens for me, I just sit and type and let it all come out of me. Then I sit there and look at it and say, "Well, that was interesting." And then I have to figure out what I want to do with this bright new character.

Thanks for stopping by the blog!

  15. I had to laugh at "alpha brute". That's such a fabulous description. It will certainly take a special someone to tame him & claim him.
