Interview with Cate Beauman

Congratulations to "Jonetta", "Linda H", and "Maureen", the winners of Cate's giveaway. Thank you to all who participated!

1. Given the nature of this website, I am compelled to ask what draws you to the Romantic Suspense genre?

I can’t imagine writing any other genre. I’m a romantic suspense girl all the way.  I love creating complex plots that weave love and danger together.  I think the romance in a story is heightened considerably when your characters have so much more to lose. Everything else is boring, in my opinion.
2. Do you recall any book bloopers—edits that slipped past you and made you say, OMG, did I type that?

No matter how many times we read our work and have our editors pick through each line for mistakes, there will always be something that gets missed.  It’s one of those annoying facts you have to learn to be okay with or you’ll make yourself crazy. My goal is to always produce a book with as few mistakes as possible but I’m human after all.  I know that in Hailey’s Truth, the third novel in The Bodyguards Of L.A. County Series, I wrote whicker furniture instead of wicker—oops!  I’m sure there are a few more blunders scattered about the hundreds of thousands of words in the novels I’ve written. All I can do is proofread, proofread, proofread and try to get it right!

3. Have you ever experienced a Déjà vu moment, where you find yourself in a scene from one of your books?

No, I haven’t but I can tell you I wish I had déjà vu moments—preferably any scene in which Hunter, Ethan, Austin, or Jackson has their shirt off!

4. Is there any danger in being a romantic suspense author?

Hmm… Well, I know I get pretty caught up in my characters and their stories.  The house usually isn’t as clean during those times and a plant has been known to die. I’m not sure if that counts.

5. As you were writing Morgan’s Hunter, did you find yourself plotting out future Bodyguards Of LA stories?

When I first started writing Morgan’s Hunter, I had no intention of creating a series, but then Ethan and Sarah, Hunter’s friends, wanted their own story. As ideas for Ethan and Sarah began to surface, so did a plot for Sarah’s daughter’s nanny, Hailey. After I completed the Morgan’s Hunter manuscript, I ‘played’ around with ideas of giving several of Ethan Cooke Security’s close protection agents their own novels. The Bodyguards Of L.A. County took off from there.

6. If you were to sit down for tea with the Queen of England, what do you think your topic of conversation would be?

I think we would talk about William and Kate’s impending parenthood and perhaps find out when she thinks Prince Harry will settle down.

7. Your covers are gorgeous. Were you involved with the creative process?

Thank you!  I love my covers.  I have to give all of the creative credit to Glendon Haddix from Streetlight Graphics.  He’s super easy to work with and does a great job. My only contribution to the process is giving Glendon ideas about the ‘feel’ I’m going for with each story and any important pieces I want reflected in the cover art. Glendon takes it from there and we go back and forth until we both think the work is perfect.
One man’s obsession.  One woman’s nightmare…

Widow Sarah Johnson struggled to pick up the pieces after her life was ripped apart. After two years of grieving, she’s found contentment in her thriving business as photographer to Hollywood’s A-list and in raising her angel-faced daughter, Kylee... until bodyguard and long-time friend Ethan Cooke changes everything with a searing moonlight kiss.

Sarah’s world turns upside down as she struggles with her unexpected attraction to Ethan and the guilt of betraying her husband’s memory. But when blue roses and disturbing notes start appearing on her doorstep, she has no choice but to lean on Ethan as he fights to save her from a stalker that won’t stop until he has what he prizes most.

The making of a story…

Hello Maureen! Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity to share Falling for Sarah, Book Two in The Bodyguards of L.A. County Series, with everyone.

Storytelling is my passion—my obsession, really. I love everything about the process. While writing Morgan’s Hunter, the first novel in The Bodyguards series, I knew I had to tell Ethan and Sarah’s story next, but I didn’t know where to take them. Every good piece of writing is centered around great characters, a strong plotline and gobs and gobs of conflict. I had my characters, but the plotline and conflicts were still iffy until everything changed with a porch beam.

Yes, you read that right.  I’m addicted to Crime Television and psychology in general.  Late one evening, I finished watching a particularly disturbing documentary on serial killers.  I had the ‘spooks’ and a major need for a glass of water.  I went out to the kitchen and turned on the faucet and freaked myself out when I caught site of our porch beam in the window.  For a moment, I thought someone was standing there peaking in.  Of course, I laughed at myself, shook my head, and got my glass of water, but my imagination started churning.  I asked myself, ‘what would it be like to look up and see someone in your window that didn’t belong? ‘What would it feel like to know someone was constantly watching?’  The next day I started my research on the inner workings of a true sociopath. Falling for Sarah came together quickly after that!

Cate will be giving away 3 eBook copies of FALLING FOR SARAH to three lucky commentors!

  2. How have I managed to miss this series?? Must remedy that ASAP! As soon as I emerge from the thesis-writing hole :).

It's a good thing I don't have a television... otherwise, I'd watch crime shows all the time and scare myself so much I'd be unable to leave the flat, haha.

  9. I started reading the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series. I love the suspense in those series. When I started reading romance, it was missing that edge of the seat excitement. I am quite very happy with the romantic suspense genre.
