USAF Combat Control

Giveaway alert!

There are a lot of romance books featuring SEAL, Marine or Ranger heroes, but I bet most of you have never heard of Combat Controllers (CCTs). I’m happy to introduce you to one though, Staff Sergeant Ryan Wentworth, USAF. He’s the hero of Tactical Strike, book two of my Bagram Special Ops series, which features men and women in uniform serving out of Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan.

CCTs are a unique breed of men who serve in the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), and they live and die by their motto, “First there”. They’re the guys on the ground embedded with SEAL or SF teams who call in air assets and provide real time targeting info and close air support (CAS) during operations. They serve on the front lines in harm’s way to eliminate enemy targets and protect troops on the ground, and save lives by doing so. In short, these guys are hard core, and they love what they do.

In Tactical Strike, Ryan meets his match in gunship pilot Captain Candace “Ace” Bradford. It’s an uphill battle for them both, but an explosive one that will change their lives forever. I hope you enjoy it!

Blurb: Gunship pilot Captain Candace Bradford has worked long and hard to earn her rank and position within the male-dominated world of Air Force Special Operations. She's not about to let anything or anyone jeopardize that, let alone one sinfully tempting man who seems determined to cause her nothing but trouble. Even if she's starting to fall for him.

As an elite Combat Controller, Staff Sergeant Ryan Wentworth is used to overcoming adversity in order to complete a mission. Breaking through Candace's prickly exterior and into her heart is a challenge he can't let go. But just when he's begun to gain her trust, they're thrown together in the field facing an overwhelming enemy force.

Candace and Ryan find themselves on the run, searching the skies for an emergency extraction. But one dangerous enemy has an agenda in mind and he'll use whatever means necessary to achieve it, including using American forces to do his dirty work.

Happy reading!

trishmow, me too! I love it when an author puts effort into research for their books.

Debra, yes, and I think it's important to showcase both men and women in uniform, which is why I wrote this series. Hope I did them justice.

mk, thank you! That tickles me pink :). Have you read Suzanne Brockmann, Stephanie Tyler, Catherine Mann and Cindy Gerard?

  8. Hi Kaylea! Love, love, love this series and am so excited I got to learn about Ryan's job as a CCT through Tactical Strike. He totally kicks butt at it! I can't wait for everyone to read this book. So, so good. Ryan and Ace are so perfect for each other, too. Congrats, Kaylea!

  12. So glad I ran across you Kaylea. I'm new to your books so I'm pretty excited because I love military books! This series, how many do you think you will write in it? What drew you to write military books?

  13. Michele, hi! I'm glad you found me too :). There are three full length books in this series, and I *may* write a novella or two in the future. Maybe. And I was first drawn to write military books because I admire the heck out of our men and women in uniform, but in most of the romances I've read there was really nothing about what they do out in the field. I felt like most authors just gloss over it, and I wanted to make sure I painted as accurate a picture of possible of what it's like for them out in combat. I hope I did them justice!

  14. Ok...I have to admit that I am saving these last two books for spring break reading....and it us killing me!! Just three more weeks and I can crack one open...but I know what will happen...total immersion! :)

  21. Sounds fantastic! Congrats to Kaylea and thanks for sharing! What was the most fun thing you did to "research" your books?

  22. Hey there! I understand this is sort of off-topic however I had to ask.
Does managing a well-established website such as
yours require a lot of work? I'm brand new to running a blog but I do write in my journal on a daily basis. I'd
like to start a blog so I can share my own experience and views online.
Please let me know if you have any ideas or tips for brand new
    aspiring bloggers. Thankyou!

  23. I love reading anything that has military theme in the story. It is hard to imagine what kind of personal battles that each of them faces on the war zones and their own personal demons to keep a relationship going. Thanks for the giveaway.

  24. I had never heard of CCTs but I imagine these must be some very brave people.

  25. Hi, Karen! Hey, no worries--the toughest thing for writers these days is to get noticed. There are so many books out there to choose from. If you do read mine, I hope you enjoy them!

Taurus, thank you! At the end of Tactical Strike you'll see a scene with Ryan and Ace's grandma. It's a true story about my own grandmother that I just had to write into a book because it's family legend. It certainly catches Ryan by surprise :).

Erin, thanks for coming by! The most interesting thing? I'd have to say all the helo research I did for Deadly Descent. Now, I'm absolutely terrified of flying, but I interviewed pilots and flight instructors, then went up in the darn helicopter a handful of times to get a feel for it and familiarize myself with certain terms, instruments, etc. I'm still proud of myself for going up :).

Kai, well said, and so very true. It's also very hard on the families back home. Thanks for the comment!

Maureen, yes, CCTs are part of the "tip of the spear", and often deploy with SEAL, Delta or SF teams into enemy territory.

  26. I just finished reading Tactical Strike Kaylea, devoured it, was such a nail-biter I couldn't put it down. Thanks for the terrific story, I enjoyed the constant adrenaline drive you took me on :-D

Lol, when you say the grandma scene was inspired by real life, does that mean that your own grandma slapped someone as a welcome? lol

Congrats on the release of Tactical Strike!! :-)

    1. Woops, didn't reply in the right spot. See next comment for my response ;).

  27. Stella, hey!!! *waves*

Thanks so much, and I'm soooo glad you loved it. And yes, my grandmother actually did that to one of my sister's boyfriends. It's legend in our family, so I had to put it into a book. My grandma drank like a fish and smoked like a chimney, yet she managed to outlive all my other grandparents. I know she'd be tickled that I wrote her into a book. She's wagging her finger at me from up there (or, maybe down there!) right now.
