Mountain Fire

Congratulations to "Samgirl", the winner of Brenda's giveaway. Thank you to all who participated!

I grew up on Nancy Drew and the Bobbsey Twins, graduated to Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers, moved on to Rex Stout and Dick Francis and Robert B. Parker. Do you see the trend?

When I decided to try my hand at writing a novel, I examined the books I liked best. And you know what? While I obviously enjoyed mystery and suspense, my favourite novels all had a strong romance subplot.  I decide I wanted to write novels about relationships...and if there was some murder and mayhem along the way, all the better.

In a way, romantic suspense is like two mysteries in one. Not only do we need to find out if the guy gets the girl (or rather 'how', as the cardinal rule of romance is the happy ending), we need to discover how they stay alive long enough to fall in love. The deeper their commitment to each other, the higher the stakes in the mystery. Honestly, it's a win/win for the reader!
I am thrilled to announce my debut romantic suspense, MOUNTAIN FIRE, was released January 9, 2013 by The Wild Rose Press!

A mountaintop mystery leads two conservationists to dangerous obsessions and violent passions.

Natural resources student June Brandt climbs Longworth Mountain for some alone time. But when Conservation Officer Alex Weaver arrives to look into the death of a grizzly bear, June is caught up in the investigation--and fascinated by Alex.

Alex is attracted by June's competence and coolness under fire--as well as her lithe body and honey-blonde hair. Although their mutual interest in protecting the natural wonders of the area brings them together, they soon realize they view love from very different angles. He offers passion and pleasure, but June wants more.

When one of Alex's colleagues is murdered, June and Alex must work together to find the poacher before other lives are lost. And Alex must look deep inside to discover if he can give June what she deserves.

Brenda is giving away an e-book copy of MOUNTAIN FIRE to one lucky commenter.  Tell her what you like best about romantic suspense!

Brenda's love of books began as a child. She ran into the living room holding "Old Hat, New Hat", tripped and smashed into the corner of the coffee table. The book sustained a deep gouge in its cover, and Brenda has never forgotten its sacrifice.

As a teenager, she saved babysitting money to buy a typewriter. It had an electric keyboard with manual return, and cost more than $300. She clacked away at that for hours.

Her first finished novel was still decades away, even though many others died on the page in the intervening years. It wasn't until her husband bought her her very own laptop for Christmas 2010 that she managed to type "The End" on what would eventually be MOUNTAIN FIRE.

Brenda lives in Northern British Columbia with her husband, three children (all of whom are taller than her) and various finny and furry pets. By day she is Creative Director at the local television station, and by night she pecks away at her works in progress.

  1. Congratulations on the release of your book! I like romantic suspense because of the quick pace of the stories and the way the optimism of the romance balances the fear of the suspense.

  2. A fellow Canuck! [Albeit, admittedly, I've yet to make it out to BC... I'm more of an eastern provinces gal :D].

Romantic suspense is my favourite genre by far. My grandmother had all of Agatha Christie's novels, so I grew up reading crime fiction and bemoaning the lack of sexytimes in those novels as I got older. Because what's better than frantic page-turning to see how the characters will escape some psychopathic villain's evil plan AND sexytimes/romance? Well, having one of the protagonists be a fit bloke with a really big gun doesn't hurt :-P.

  3. I love the ups and downs of the suspense and the romance. in romantic suspense it seems like there is more lead up and foreplay, my favorite part...would love to win a NOOK version, thanks for the

  4. I enjoy reading many different genres, but Romantic Suspense is my favorite. When running for your life, emotions are so much more intense. And who doesn't like the protectiveness of an alpha male? Smile.
Congrats on your book. It looks like a winner.

  5. Nice to meet you here on JRS! The book sounds good. What do I like best about romantic suspense? I think I love that the hero and heroine have many obstacles to overcome in addition to just their budding romance. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

  6. Romantic Suspense not only delivers a hot romance but also has an intense storyline. The hero and herione have to use their wits, right a wrong, make their world safer, and they fall in love. It's like watching a fast paced action movie only you get more out of it because you get inside all the characters heads.

  7. Congrats on your romantic suspense debut! Thanks for sharing today! Your book sounds wonderful... Love the bit of danger the hero & heroine deal with while exploring their feelings for each other in Romantic Suspense. Wishing you the best with your book!

  8. Thanks for all the congrats...and great comments.

It is fun to read a novel where you know the ending will be happy, but you want to find out how the characters get there!

  9. Congratulations on the release of your debut novel! I love romantic suspense because a good story will keep me on the edge of my seat, turning pages quickly to find out 'who done it' just before the big moment for the HEA. If the big moment comes before you find out 'who done it' - that works, too.

  10. Congradulations on the release of your book. I would be very interested in reading your work.

  11. Congrats! I like the action.

  12. I like a romance suspense because it keeps me with them anticipating what is coming up next! Love to see if I'm right. Also, it is usually a can't put down read until it's done...then I can sit back and reflect on it.

  13. Romantic Suspense does have something extra to enjoy. I like the action as well as the actual romance.

  14. Congratulations on the release! I love romantic suspense because of the suspense, trying to figure who dunit! And I also love the romance in the story.

  18. I love the romance in a story but its the suspense that keeps me reading. I like the anticipation of the danger as long with the action that comes with it. I've been reading these types of stories since before they had a title! I look forward to picking up your new book!
