New Year And Anniversaries

Congratulations to "lag123", the winner of Dee's giveaway. Thank you to all who participated, and Happy New Year!

There is one thing I know for certain. Everyone here loves romantic suspense. And why not? It’s a great genre to love. Where else do you get heart pounding adventure, action and love?

Today, especially, I’ve been thinking about romantic suspense since it’s my two year anniversary of getting “the call.” Yep, two years ago today, my agent called with the good news that Angela James wanted to acquire my romantic suspense for Carina Press. Carina Press actually acquired Dangerous Race and Danger Zone nearly simultaneously.  Considering that I had been working toward this goal for ten years, I have to admit to being a little happy. Okay, a lot happy. Since that date in 2010, I’ve had 3 releases and I’ve sold 4 books. The fourth book in the Adrenaline Highs series, Living Dangerously, will be out May 20, 2013. Okay… sorry I digressed…

What I want to talk about is romantic suspense itself. I don’t know about you, but I love everything about it. I love the conflict, and I love watching people discover they are more than what they sometimes think they are. Everyone can be a hero at some point and usually we get to see that in a romantic suspense. Most of my characters are just regular every day people who land in sticky situations and have to do things they wouldn’t normally do to survive. Yep, I love a reluctant hero and they come on all shapes and sizes, male and female alike.

But what’s my favorite part of a romantic suspense? Hm. It’s so hard to choose. I love the action. I love reading so fast to keep up with what’s happening that I can’t turn the pages (or scroll!) quickly enough. I love watching two people fall in love amidst the chaos of a well constructed plot. I love when the clock is ticking and our characters struggle to come out ahead, which of course they always do! And I really love watching the hero and heroine learn to trust each other, even when it looks like maybe they shouldn’t.

To celebrate my anniversary, I’m giving away a digital copy of Dangerous Race to one lucky commenter. Just tell me:  What’s your favorite part of a romantic suspense? What is it that keeps you coming back for more?

Happy New Year everyone! May it be filled with much love, happiness, success and of course... romantic suspense!

  1. Romantic suspense has become my favourite genre. Romance is always nice, but I like a story to hold your attention and keep you guessing as to what is going to happen next. The suspense part is what pulls you into the story IMO.
Thanks for having this giveaway and I'm looking forward to reading more of your great stories!

  2. I have been in love with RS since, forever. I know I will get a HEA , but i love the nail biting, hold your breath suspense and fearless hero/heroine. I love that they take that leap off the cliff into danger that i would NEVER be able to do. I know I will get lost in the story and all my troubles/comaimts will disappear for any given minute. Thank you romantic suspense writers everywhere!! I would love to win a copy of this book. Trishleroy49 at gmail dot com

    1. Hi TrishJ,
You hit on something I forgot to mention! I love writing people who do things I don't have the courage to do. I guess it's my way of being brave. I get to do it through my characters! A great point. I love getting lost in a story too! Nothing better. (Well, maybe getting lost in the story while I'm eating chocolate. Haha.)

  3. I am not sure how I first started reading romantic suspense but I know I haven't stopped since. I love that the characters have more than just their own relationship to overcome and that other conflict in the story will sometimes propel them into a better relationship or cause them to have some rough times before it gets better. Love the edge of your seat, can't put it down reading. Thanks for offering a giveaway and Congrats on your anniversary of the call!

    1. Hi Amy,
Yes! I love that there's more than just the relationship on the line. I like the higher stakes and external threat! (I can hear the scary music already. Haha.) And thanks! It still feels like it happened yesterday. It was a great day. (It also happens to be my sister's birthday, so I know I won't ever forget it. )

  7. Happy Anniversary! :)
My fav part of Romantic Suspense... the bit of danger each couple faces... adds to the journey the characters take to get to their HEA.
    Happy New Year!

  9. I'm a big fan of RS, too, and it's for all the reasons that have been stated. I'm a bit jaded and don't always believe in the HEA, so found I needed something more (i.e., suspense, conflict) and RS gives it to me. I'll read regular romance and holiday romance, but always go back to RS. Happy Anniversary, wishing you many more successful years.

    1. Hi donnas,
Yep, there had better be an HEA for me or I'm not reading it. I need the "feel good" at the end. Life has enough serious in it so I read RS for the uplifting ending. Thanks for commenting.

  13. Romantic Suspense makes the stories more interesting. I love the intrigue, mystery, suspense, and the tension in the story and between the hero and heroine. I need some exciting in my life and this is the safest way of doing so.

    Happy New Year!!!

Ha. I agree! It's a great way to get safe excitement! Plus I'm a big fan of action. You never know what's around the corner in a good RS. That's the way it should be. Thanks for dropping by!

  16. Hi lag123,
So, you're not a skip-to-the-back-of-the-book-and-read-the-ending-first type of person...? LOL. I'm not either. I like the surprise.

  17. Thanks for a great post and congrats Dee on the success of your series! I love RS b/c of the heightened tension. It kills me sometimes to keep reading when the tension is high and all I want to do is flip to the end and make sure everyone makes it! But I restrain myself b/c that's the whole point of reading the story! :)
