Military Heroes to Fall in Love With

Congratulations to "Colleen C." the winner of Catherine and Joanne's giveaway. Thank you to all who participated.

This month, long time critique partners Catherine Mann and Joanne Rock celebrate their new books by embarking on their first-ever joint blog tour! Cathy’s Berkley release, GUARDIAN, is available September 4th and Joanne’s Harlequin Blaze, FULL SURRENDER is a September release. While each writes a range of romance, their areas of overlap include military heroes and romantic suspense. Today, Joanne and Cathy compare notes on their current military romance stories.

Joanne Rock

Full Surrender is a “Uniformly Hot” Blaze, Joanne’s third military hero.

1.      What made you want to write about a Navy SWO- Surface Warfare Officer- hero?

First, I admire members of the military tremendously. The selflessness of their calling is always very hero-worthy. But I was in the midst of writing connected books for Blaze, each featuring a brother of the fictional Murphy family. I realized very early on in the process that one of those brothers would have been called to serve. In a hyper-competitive family born into wealth and privilege, it made sense to me that at least one of those brothers would really need to give back.

I opted for Danny to have chosen a Navy job that demands a great deal of time away from home. This was a good fit for him since he welcomed the chance to put the past behind him – including his old relationship that hadn’t worked out. Surface Warfare Officers spend many months at sea, where my hero can focus on his duty without the distraction of the One Who Got Away. Yet guess who is waiting for him on the pier when he returns?

2.      What makes this military story unique?

FULL SURRENDER is a reunion story that is set Stateside and it doesn’t sugar coat the hardships of military life. While the heroine has personal obstacles to overcome to be with the hero, she also has to prepare herself for life without him for long periods of time. This is a hardship that is very real for military spouses and it’s a conflict that needs to be dealt with in a relationship up front.

Catherine Mann

Guardian is part of Cathy’s Dark Ops series for Berkley…

1.      What made you choose a military hero who works in the world of Air Force dark ops testing?

My whole “Dark Ops” series embraces the world of top secret testing, featuring the aviators who daringly try out the new gadgets the world hasn’t even heard of yet.  These test aviators are the pioneers of the military world.  Their daring, mixed with a brainiac scientific bent, makes for intriguing heroes!

2.      What makes this military story unique?

GUARDIAN features an active duty heroine as well, something we don’t see very often in military romantic suspense.  The heroine is an Air Force lawyer, prosecuting a case against one of the aviators working in the hero’s pet test project.  Needless to say, sparks fly in – and out – of the courtroom!

What do you enjoy about a military hero? One lucky commenter will be chosen at random to win a copy of FULL SURRENDER by Joanne Rock and GUARDIAN by Catherine Mann.

Giveaway ends 11:59pm EST Sep. 6th. Please supply your email in the post. You may use spaces or full text for security. 6. Hello! I love military romantic suspense books. I have no family or friends in the military so it is always very exciting to read what I can about it. I guess what I love about military heroes is that while they have the same fears as anyone else they don't let it stop them from protecting what is theirs and they are very loyal to their country and their own men. I haven't read any of your books yet so I need to go check them out! Thanks for the post.

  7. I love that military heros are so focused, whether on the immediate danger or the heroine. The total focus of their entire being takes my breath away. Yet they can be so gentle. Sigh. Please put my name in the hat. I would love to win. Trishleroy49 at gmail dot com.

  11. mnj, smiled to read your comment... ALPHA! Agreed! On a personal note, it made me want to give credit to Cathy- both as a writer and as my friend- for writing such strong alpha guys AND showing us through her heroines how real modern women can relate to them. I really admire Cathy's heroines- and the piece of her that is inside each of them- for being able to go toe-to-toe with those guys while still honoring and respecting the strength within the man. As a woman and wife, I like the way she walks that line to communicate with and love an Alpha while still giving them room to save the world when necessary :-).

  18. I love that military heroes, beneath their hardened exterior, always have a soft spot and really 'melt' for the love of their life.

I currently have 8 Catherine Mann books on my bookshelf, so I guess I'm a big fan! I haven't read any of Joanne's books recently, but Full Surrender sounds like a book I would really enjoy.
