Guest Blog Featuring Kelly Abell

A NEW KIND OF HEROINE

Congratulations to Lea Ellen, the winner of Kelly Abell's giveaway. Thank you to all who participated.

From the time I was a little girl I loved authors like Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney.  They were probably the first romantic suspense authors I’d ever read, and at the time had no clue that was what I was reading.  I just loved the fact that the heroine in their books always found her way into trouble of some kind or other and the handsome hero would save the day.  I had to have more than a romance to keep me interested.  I wanted intrigue suspense and danger and I found all of that and more in those books.

The genre has progressed over the years to include tougher heroines, more evil, psychotic villains, and heroes with a whole new skill set.  What I find most intriguing is the new breed of heroine.  I’ve a fondness for the woman who can take adverse circumstances and make them work to her advantage.  She’s savvy, intelligent, knows how to use her feminine wiles to seduce both villain and hero alike, yet remains true to herself and uncompromising in what she believes in.  She draws from within that pool of inner strength to rise up to any danger, and overcomes adversity on pure faith in her abilities.  The men she comes into contact with find that both sexy and intimidating at the same time.  They are drawn to her like the proverbial bug to the light zapper.

In the first book of my In Lies Series, Sealed In Lies you’ll find just that with Caroline Walters.  A Georgia Beauty Queen married to a very important Washington Senator, she utilizes her capture by sexy ex-Navy SEAL Jack Weaver to her complete advantage.  Jack assumes he’s in complete control of his situation but all along Caroline is using the rouge CIA agent as a means of escape.

So let’s hear it for the crafty heroine.  You’ll find her in books from multiple authors in this genre.  Some of my faves are Eve Dallas by Nora Roberts, Eve Duncan by Iris Johansen (just the name Eve paints a picture, right?)  Lacey Sherlock, by Catherine Coulter…You get the idea.  Check out these authors as well as my In Lies Series available in most online bookstores and by special order in your local bookstore.

Jack Weaver, a sexy under cover operative for the CIA, can’t seem to escape a life of lies. Working undercover in the largest drug cartel in Columbia, Jack lives a life of guns, drugs and beautiful women. It all comes to an end when Jack uncovers a plot to assassinate the President-Elect on Inauguration Day. Suddenly things become infinitely worse when Jack is forced to kill his old SEAL Commander who is now a Deputy Director of the CIA. Jack is now on the run not only for his life but he’s the only one who knows about the assassination attempt, other than a mysterious man who calls himself the Emperor and seems to be calling all the shots.

Jack is being haunted by terrifying dreams from his past that seem to be connected to this entire conspiracy involving his old SEAL team. Desperate for answers Jack breaks into the home of Vice-President elect Warren Walters, another SEAL teammate, where he is discovered by Warren’s abused wife Caroline. He forces Caroline to go with him with the intention of letting her go once he uses her as leverage to get the information he needs. Even as Caroline thinks of ways to escape her captor, she finds herself unexpectedly attracted to him. She begins to wonder if a night spent in his arms will erase years of abuse. When she is offered the opportunity to be set free Caroline refuses to leave, seeing this as an opportunity to escape her own life of lies. This starts a chain reaction of passionate feelings neither of them is prepared for. Desire sizzles as Jack and Caroline come closer and closer to the answers and each other. The key question is will they be able to save the President-elect’s life as well as their own, or will a blast from Jack’s past destroy them all?

  4. I too like it when a heroine is 'crafty' and capable. Don't get me wrong, I like a good novel with a damsel in distress too. But it is always an exciting, fun read when the heroine can take matters into her own hands and figure things out herself.

I look forward to reading Sealed in Lies. I love books that have Washington intrigue in them! Thanks for the blog- I've added you to my TBR list(somewhere toward the top!). I have a great independent book store not to far from me and I love to help them out by ordering books.

I love a good damsel in distress too, but today's modern take charge heroine really thrills me.

  8. I'm also a fan of this new kind of heroine, she reminds me of my close friends and myself. ;) I tend to get frustrated with a damsel in distress type and keep thinking why don't you do this or do that? I can't wait to check out your book, it sounds fantastic!

    1. Thanks Whitney. I love nothing better than a true Kick butt heroine. Caroline starts out not really knowing her true strength part of her appeal is how she discovers she no longer has to be the meek subserviant person she' been used to. It was fun watching her come to life.
I hope you enjoy the book.
