Guest Blog Featuring Cindy Gerard

SHORT AND SWEET

Congratulations to "Laura", the winner of Cindy Gerard's giveaway. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Short and sweet - that’s what I’m keeping this blog post to today.  We’re all busy, right?  I know I am and I figure you are too, so let’s cut to the chase.

LAST MAN STANDING comes out January 31st (that’s this coming Tuesday) and I want you to buy it. :o)  How’s that for honesty? Okay – you need more than that so here’s the skinny.    LMS is the 7th and final book in my Black Ops Inc series and I’m thrilled to say, it’s one of my favorite.  Yes, it features  Joe Green, a strong, enigmatic alpha male (all of my books feature ‘those kind of guys’) but even better, it features the most transformative heroine I’ve ever written.   Stephanie Tompkins has always wanted to be something she wasn’t.  Had never had the courage to pursue her dreams and then a set of circumstances force her to become the woman she had always hoped she could be.  Here’s a little snippet of Stephanie’s journey to her true self.

…Talk about defining moments.  Talk about revelations.  Now that she had a moment to take a deep breath, sit back and assess, she was seeing herself in a whole new light – both literally and figuratively when she caught a glimpse of her reflection in a wavy, dust-streaked window pane.
Her hand flew to her throat and she leaned in, looked deeper.  It was her alright.  But a high octane version.  A messy one.  Her clothes were rumpled and damp.  Her usually tidy hair was a wild tumble of damp waves around her shoulders.  And her face … her facial appearance even seemed to have altered.  What she’d always seen as soft, unremarkable features had transformed somehow.  She looked … edgy, she finally decided.  Decisive.  Experienced and lean.
Kick ass, she thought with a ridiculous little smile and embraced the idea.
And she looked, she told herself, like a woman who did not need a man like Joe Green to complete her life, but like a woman who could damn well complete his.
They were getting out of this mess.  She was going to make it happen.  And when they did, Joe Green was going to find out that Stephanie Tompkins was a force to be reckoned with….

There you have it.  A little taste of the new improved Stephanie :o).  I think you’re really going to like Stephanie’s journey.  And I KNOW you’re going to love her and Joe together.

Have questions? I’d love to hear from you.  I’m  an open book so ask away to be eligible for a drawing for an autographed book from my backlist.

Giveaway ends 9pm EST Jan. 28th. Please supply your email in the post. You may use spaces or full text for security. (ex. jsmith at gmail dot com) If you do not wish to supply your email, or have trouble posting, use the email under the CONTACT page to enter with a subject title of JRS GIVEAWAY.

  6. This book looks great, can't wait to read it. Just finished Seal of my Dreams, loved that too, so many of my favorite authors wrote parts of it. Thanks for the great reads, would love a copy of this. I also have a NOOK if that works...lsscarchuk@att.net

  7. Thanks everyone. And don't be sad. You WILL see the BOIs again, I promise! As a matter of fact, I'm writing the first book in a new series right now. the series is called: One Eyed Jacks. And the hero of the first book is none other than Mike - Primetime - Brown, who you met in With No Remorse and will see more of in Last Man Standing. And I have it on good authority that the BOIs will make an appearance in his book.

  10. I love that you are exploring the transformation of the heroine more deeply than ever. It sounds like an interesting journey to take with her, and being an avid people watcher, I love to see what motivates people to make choices and find out how those choices work out. The rest of the book sounds exciting too. Is the transformative heroine the reason this book is one of your favorites? bethanyleeboden@gmail.com

  12. I love your books Cindy, can't wait to get Joe's story but even more Stephanie's story. I always felt in the books prior that she was kind of shy and withdrawn for these guys but it sounds like she's going to come into her own here, should be good. I'm loving Mike's character so far, look forward to his story

  13. HI...It seems appropriate that Joe's and Stephanie"s story is the ending to the series. Joe was the most affected from Brian's death, and has been in love with Stephanie forever, but never felt "good enough". From your sneak peek today, looks like she's TAKING CHARGE! Go girl!! Thanks Cindy, i can't wait till Tuesday.

  21. Hi guys. I'm back! Thanks for all the lovely notes. Someone asked about the Bodyguards and if they'll ever be back. While I have no plans in the immediate future, I NEVER say never. 22. Happy Birthday, Sonja. I have a January birthday too. As a matter of fact, it's this coming Monday, the day before release day. I consider that a present too :o)

  23. Bethany - you asked if the transformation of the heroine in Last Man Standing was the reason this book was one of my favorites. Partly, yes. Also because I learned so much about Joe that I didn't know. And the entire message of the book was just gratifying. Hope you enjoy it too.

  24. Janet - yes, I'm sad to see the BOI series end. I've been with these guys for 7 books now, one novella and 2 short stories. I'm going to miss them. But I'm also happy that they are going out on a high note. PLUS, I will be including them as characters in Mike Brown's book which I'm writing now. I'm going to be excited to see them again :o)

  27. Wondering how your hummingbirds were doing. Such a random question, but we remember the hummingbird story from Facebook. A finch hit the window the other day, and we were able to get it into a basket. My daughter said " I hope we don't have to put it in the bath tub." Congratulations on the new release, and Happy Birthday.

  35. So looking forward to this one. I "found" the BOI series via The Mystery Guild. My question, since it's one I deal with all the time, is how much do you know about your characters in one book before they get their own stories? Do you plan a multi-book arc, or do you discover your characters' back stories when it's their turn? terry @ terryodell.com

  36. Looks like I'm really missing out by not having read this series! I can't wait to start reading!

My favorite thing about all the book blogs out there are getting to know new authors! This series is going at the top of my list. My ereader has over 600 books on it and I haven't even had it a year! Payday is coming!

  38. Good questions Terry and the answer is: a little bit of both. Sometimes I have a very clear, fully fleshed out character background and sometimes character traits and back story emerge as the books progress. Joe Green is an example of a character I really knew little about until I started writing his story. Had no idea he was carrying around so much baggage and was so wounded. I love it when those revelations present themselves

  39. Cindy one of the best things about this post is that i see you are writing a new series that is a spin off from the BOI series. Gets my heart pumping! lol Johnny Duane Reed will always be my favorite BOI. Tall and hand some and capable and just a tad vulnerable and a shorty little woman brings him down to size. lol Can you tell i'm short. Joe has always been one of the more quieter guys so i'm thrilled to see what happens in his book considering how timid Stephanie comes across being in the previous books. You have these tough kick ass guy but you always through a equally tough woman at them. The results have been awesome! Congrats! I have a January birthday too btw but it's passed January 10th! Happy birthday a few days early. One question do you know how many books there will be in the new series yet?

  43. How do you research the military stuff? Do you have a friend who answers questions for you, or did you have to cold-call a random military person? (and if it was the latter, how did you get them not to think you were crazy?)

  45. Just finished the last book in your Bodyguard series. Loved, love, loved it. Started reading them when recommended by various blogs like Just Romantic Suspense and Bitch Can Write a Book. Can't wait to start Black Ops series. Glad I listened to the recommendations. Thanks for some great reads.

  46. Happy birthday late! Lise B. January's a good month. As for how many books will there be in the new One Eyed Jacks series , right now it's slated for 3 but you just never know. The BOI's were only supposed to be 3 books to start with. Then 6 and we ended up with 7 :o)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Deb's question: how do you decide if a character is going to be a short story or a novel? Or do the guys tell you?

Sometimes I know in advance (I actually plan it LOL) sometimes it just happens. That's what I love about writing. There are surprises around every corner. For instance, when Gabe - Arch angel - Jones, showed up in Dallas and Amy's book (INTO THE DARK) I had NO idea he was going to pop into the book. I'd never thought about him, never planned on him and then BAM! There he was. Larger than life and twice as commanding. I needed a solution for the trouble Dallas and Amy had gotten themselves into and he just materialized out of the shadows. The minute he appeared on the page I KNEW he was going to have to have his own book. No way was I going to walk away from that man or let him walk away from me. :o)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Laura's question: How do you research the military stuff?

I have a lot of sources, Laura. First, I read a lot of military based books (Black Hawk Down, One Bullet Away, Generation Kill, to name a few) I also have several military contacts - some active duty and some retired. All were strangers when we met (I accosted them either on line or with phone calls) and all are friends now :o) I feel very blessed.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Someone asked: Have you ever written a minor character that grew on you so you decided to write their story? Do you have a favorite character?

I guess I more or less answered that above. Gabe Jones was such a character. Once he showed up, I had trouble keeping him from taking over the book! Mike - Primetime - Brown is another example. I needed some help with transpo for the BOIs while they were on a mission in Sierra Leone. The part called for a pilot. Primetime showed up and stole the show - for me anyway. Now he will be the hero of the first book in the new One-eyed Jacks series :o) Love how that worked out :o)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Oh - as for a favorite character - that's a tough one. Nolan Garrett from To The Edge will always be special to me because he was my first :o) But I love all my guys and their women. I do have a soft spot for Johnny Reed though :o)

    ReplyDelete
  51. So fun to read the comments by other readers who love your books as much as I do! Loved the Bodyguards from the first book(Nolan hooked me!) and was thrilled that you continued with a connected series, the BOIs. I'm eagerly anticipating the next series- I know it will be a page-turning, action-packed, romantic adventure! My question is when did you decide to take the leap to full-time writing? Which, I will add, I for one am grateful for!

  52. I cannot wait to read this!! I'm a little sad that it's the last in this series - I have LOVED this series!! My question is, what's up next?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Dawn - I wrote for at least 10 years before I 'quit the day job' and took the plunge to full time writing. While I'm so glad I made the big move, it was a little scarey at the time. It's been great though - in a HUGE part thanks to fans like you all who have supported my writing all these years. I am sooooo appreciative!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I know, Kelli. I'm a little sad too but it's okay. You'll see the BOIs again - as early as my next book :o) They will play a key role in the first book of my new series, One-Eyed Jacks which will feature Mike - Primetime - Brown who you met in With No Remorse and will see again in Last Man Standing. Im really excited about the new series :o) More alpha males and strong women but with more of an edge, even, than the Bodyguard or BOI books :o)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thanks for this post! I have already read Stephanie and Joe's book and loved it! Cindy, I loved that you incorprated Mike "Primetime" Brown into this storyline. It makes us readers eager to read the new spin off series. Also, I loved the way you used the previous events in the first book, SHOW NO MERCY and made everything come full circle to make a great concluson to the BOI series.

My queston is, how do you plan the storyarcs that span over your series?

    Ann

    alltherhage AT gmail DOT com

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hi Ann. And thanks so much for the kind words on Last Man Standing. I can't believe you read it already :o) As for the story arcs. Sometimes I'm surprised myself by how they all work through. Joe wasn't even supposed to get his book :o) But because of so much fan support ASKING for Joe's story, my publisher decided to take a chance and have me write it. I knew Joe was tortured from the beginning of the series. I knew he'd always taken Bryan's death harder than the others. I just didn't know why until I started exploring the plot for his book. I was just as surprised as you were to find out what happened and why Joe felt so much grief and guilt. I LOVE those kind of surprises :o)

  58. Cindy, I discovered your Bodyguard series after it was complete so I got to read one right after the other. Like everyone, I'm sad to see BOIs end. Last Man Standing will be waiting in my mailbox when I get home from work on Jan. 31st, but I will probably hold off reading it for awhile since it's the last one.

I love your writing style and look forward to starting the new series with you. I was intrigued by Primetime too and look forward to a witty, quick moving book to go along with his personality. What kind of girl will catch his attention? He appears all about the frosting, but I know you won't let that be the true Primetime.

  60. Sue - you are sooo right about Primetime. Like Johnny Reed, on the surface he's all arrogant, smart ass alpha male. Not a care in the world. Just WAIT until you find out what skeletons he has hiding in his closet :o)

  61. I was wondering if the first 6 BOI books will be re-released. I want to get all of the originals but if they will be re done then I have to wait. Anyone know??

  62. I don't have an answer for you Evan. If your taking about the 6 Bodyguard books, St Martins Press published them. They are still going strong in both paperback and e-book so I'm thinking they won't be re-releasing them for a while. If you book store doesn't have them, they are available at Amazon and B&N or your book store could order them.
As for the first 6 BOI books - they are also still selling well so I don't see any re-release for them. My publisher IS running a special on Amazon, however. The Men Of Black Ops Inc volume 1 (Show No Mercy, Take No Prisoners, Whisper No Lies) and Volume 2 (Feel the Heat, Risk No Secrets, With No Remorse) are bundled on the Amazon site for a reduced rate for KINDLE. Vol 1 is all three books for $15.99 which is a little over $5.00 each. The second set doesn't have as much of a reduction :o( Wish it did :o(
